Care of your garden furniture The chestnut and oak goods will last for many years untreated and will weather to a silvery grey colour. Alternatively, treat with Danish oil or equivalent, (e.g. Liberon Garden Furniture Oil, clear,) which will give a darker colour, as if wet. (3 coats required, plus annual re-coating.) Or use light-coloured preservative woodstain such as Sadolin Classic (3 coats required, re-treatment after about 7 years). To enhance the useful life of the furniture, keep off damp ground in winter months. Yearly soaking of the feet of tables and seats in a preservative such as Cuprinol Clear will enhance their lifespan. Softwood items have been treated with a wood preservative.
Rainfall may wash out surface tannin and temporarily stain light surfaces such as stone patios. Please avoid standing furniture in such places where staining would be unwelcome until the furniture is well rainwashed.
Some splitting of round chestnut may occur, but this will not affect the strength of the item.
