Spend a day in the wood learning basic family bushcraft.

If you've enjoyed a "castaway" or "survive in the wild"  at Wilderness Wood, this is the next adventure for you.

Spend a whole day deep in the woods really getting to grips with techniques for firelighting, shelter building, water collection, wild food gathering and also cordage and navigation.

Here is a rough guide to the day:

9.45 am  Check in at the barn.

10.00   Welcome from your leaders for the day, safety talk and toilet stop.

10.15    Walk down into the woodland, looking at and gathering edible and inedible plants.

10.45   Establish camp – work out positioning, considerations, materials, size, durability,      techniques and designs.  Get building!

11.20   Elevenses brewed for you with a Kelly kettle.

11.30    Fire starting – where to collect tinder, kindling, and firewood.   How can you start your fire – try at least 4 different ways, including fire bow.

Safe cooking including ways of supporting cooking utensils

How to prepare woodland food.  Lunch!

Fire from a mangnifying glass

1.30ish   How to disguise your fire.

How to collect and purify water

In the afternoon           Cordage.

Plant identification challenge - sort out the poisonous and inedible...

Tea.

Further work on the shelters before the great shelter test!

Orientation and navigation.

Timings are approximate, based on how quickly everyone progresses.  There is no rush – we aim to let everyone feel they have learnt and achieved what they wanted to. We will finish on time, however.

We will provide all equipment, drinks, water for fire extinguishing, first aid, biscuits and apples, and a woodland salad.

What to bring:   Rough clothes – you will get dirty!

Waterproofs if there’s any hint of yet more rain

Penknife if you have one but it’s not essential

                        A mug

Some sausages to cook on your camp fire and bread rolls for them

Some other food to nibble during the day if you like

We look forward to meeting you and having a great time in the woods!

Andrew, Sarah and George
