We grow wood in two ways at Wilderness Wood:

 

1 PLANTATIONS

 

   1) Find a tall, planted tree, like this one.

 

   2) Is it a broadleaf tree?...............

 

      Or a coniferous tree?...............

 

 

   3) Underline the correct name of the tree:

          Sweet chestnut        Norway spruce

             Scots pine    Oak     Silver birch

 

 

4) How old is it? Count the whorls (rings of 

    branches)

                     .....................years

 

 

 5) Stand next to the trunk.  Estimate how much 

   taller the tree grew in the year opposite your head.

 

 

 6) How far apart were the trees planted (remember

    to look for the stumps of trees that have already

    been cut down).

 

 

7) Next to the tree, draw the tool we will use to fell it.

 
     
 

8) Tick when you find a small planted tree

    protected by a guard.                              .................

 

 

9) Is it the same kind of tree as the tall tree?..................

 

 

10) Which animal is the guard protecting the tree from?

 

      ........................................

      Draw a picture of the animal next to the tree.

 

 

2 COPPICES

 

1) Find a coppiced tree, and draw it.

   Make sure your drawing shows:

   - the stool (stump)

   - thick poles

   - thin poles

   - scars where poles were cut  

     when the tree was last coppiced

 

 

2) Is it a broadleaved tree?..............

   or a coniferous tree?...................

 

 

3) Underline its correct name:

4) How many thick poles are there growing on your tree?

                                 ................

How many thin poles?.................

 

 

5) On the picture of your coppiced tree, draw a tool that your great-grandfather would have used to cut the coppice.

 

 

TO DO LATER

 

1) Find out how many years old the coppice poles are when they are cut  5....... 15...... 50.......

 

 

2) How old might the coppice stool be?   20 years .........    200 years ........  2000 years  ........

 

 

3) The plantation trees will be felled when they are 60 years old. How old will you be then?.......

 

 

4) What is the plantation timber used for?............................................................................

 

 

5) What is the coppice wood used  for? ...............................................................................

 

 

6) Find out some more of the many things coppiced wood was used for in the past.
