MATHS TRAIL                         Back to KS2 contents

RELEASE MATHS FROM THE CLASSROOM with a day of maths in the woods - practical, purposeful and fun!

The Maths trail was created by a team of local teachers and was fully revised in 2005.

It applies knowledge of maths in the natural environment, with activities covering a wide range of mathematical areas across a spread of abilities.
Tasks involve the children in practical work, asking them to measure, weigh, calculate, estimate and make decisions in real situations. There are more than enough tasks to fill a whole day at the wood and teachers will need to allow time to follow up the work undertaken by the children.

The trail is suitable for children from Y5 to Y7, and the mathematics ranges from Level 2 to Level 5. The trail is in the form of activity sheets, based on several specific areas of the wood. Children, or group leaders, are able to choose problems from the activity sheets at suitable levels of difficulty.

Ask for a copy of the sheets to be sent by email for you to print out as required, plus a teachers' copy which includes full instructions (Word files, both approx 760KB).

You will need to work in groups of 5-8 children, each with an adult helper. Groups rotate around the different areas.

It is recommended that the teacher completes some initial preparation and a pre-visit to the wood.
