Wild camp

Cook your dinner over a fire, watch the stars and camp out in our wood and canvas shelters or a tent deep in the woods

What is it?

Hire the woodland shelter ("streamside") or large canvas shelter ("woodglade") or small canvas shelter ("under oak") and fireplace in the depths of the wood for a really secluded wild camp.

Who is it for?

Suitable for up to 12 people. The shelter will sleep 5 at a pinch, and you can pitch up to three small tents. The sites are about one third of a mile downhill from the car park and toilets, and is is not accessible to your vehicle.  Teenage groups must be accompanied by at least one adult.

Thanks to www.blissonwheels.com

What Wilderness Wood provides

Up to 25 litres of water. Written instructions and map. A bag of charcoal or barbecue wood (purchase more if you like).  Up to 3 wheelbarrows.  A spade to dig sanitary pits.  Landrover transport to within 40-50 yards of your site if pre-booked.  For cheaper alternatives, you can use wheelbarrows and we collect you at the end (uphill!), or use wheelbarrows both ways.

(It might sound obvious, but please note there's no running water or electricity down there! )

What to bring

Food and drink, cooking equipment, mugs etc. Campers will also need tents, sleeping bags, mats, warm clothes, waterproofs, torches, mobile phone, toilet paper etc.   Please use as little packaged food as possible. We are a zero waste site - you must take all your rubbish away with you.  There are compost bins at the barn, paper can be burnt, and there are recycling bins at the entrance.

When?

Starting between 5pm and 6pm and finishing between 8.30am and 10am.

You must keep to your booked times.

Admission to the whole wood is included for half a day either side of the camp out.  If you want to book for 2 nights you pay for two wild camps, 1 cookout and 1 day's admission.

How much?

Normal admission charges plus £30 per site, including one bag of fuel; plus a £50 returnable deposit against damage.

Landrover transport (pre-booked):  £11 each way.

Extra fuel:  Firewood £6 per sack, local charcoal £5.90 per bag.

The "streamside" site, near the seasonal stream, has a 10ft x 8ft semi-enclosed wooden shelter .

The "woodglade" site is in a secluded clearing and has an open-sided 12' x 10' canvas shelter.

The "under oak" site is near the top of the wood, about 10 minutes from the car park and has an open-sided canvas shelter.

Each has space for 2 larger tents (max. footprints 5 x 3m. each excl. guyropes), or 3 smaller ones; a fire-ring with cooking grill, picnic table and benches.

Safety and behaviour

You are entirely responsible for the safety and behaviour of yourself and your group. Written Instructions will be given on the use of the fire site and on general woodland safety. Fires must not be lit elsewhere. No radios or recorded music. All rubbish must be taken away with you and the site left as you found it. We reserve the right to make a charge for clearing any rubbish or for any damage to the shelter, fireplace, benches or general area.
