For more than 30 years, Wilderness Wood has taken a slow and sustainable approach to life. In 1979 my parents Chris and Anne Yarrow bought this 2,000 year-old woodland, built their own house and a timber-frame barn that became a visitor centre as more people came to explore the 62-acre wood. They began active coppicing, introduced award-winning continuous cover forestry and established a programme of events and activities that allowed thousands of visitors to enjoy the wood throughout the seasons.

After three decades of hard work my parents recently retired, and today my partner Jonathan and I are continuing the legacy they began at Wilderness Wood.  We’re both specialists and passionate believers in sustainability and we intend to strengthen the Wood’s position as a place where people can enjoy the natural world, learn more about sustainability and be inspired to live more sustainable lives.

The watchwords for our work here are slow and sustainable, and we’re working with our General Manager Doug Stewart along with the rest of the Wilderness Wood team, local people, friends and visitors to refresh and build interest in the work of the Wood.

We invite you to slow down, leave the speed and cares of everyday life behind, try out a more sustainable way of life and enjoy the best of the Sussex countryside.

See you soon in the Wood!
