Wild camp

Wild camping at the woodland shelter

What is it? Camp overnight in the depths of the wood, sleeping in our traditionally-built wooden shelter and / or your own tent(s).

Who is it for? The shelter isn’t very big! It will sleep 5 at a pinch. It is possible to bring up to three small tents. Maximum number of people is 10. You will be camping without a member of Wilderness Wood staff, so you need to be self-sufficient. You will have a 20 minute walk from the car park and toilets. The site is not accessible to your vehicle.

What Wilderness Wood provides The 10ft x 8ft shelter to sleep in. An outdoor picnic bench and other seats. An outdoor fireplace for cooking, which has rails for billy-cans etc. 25 litres of drinking water. A map. Stream water available for washing or fire extinguishing. A member of staff to transport your gear to and from the site, if required. For a cheaper alternative, you can take your gear down in wheelbarrows, and we will collect you in the morning (uphill!)  Alternatively, wheelbarrow your gear both ways.  We shall not be able to return your £50 deposit until we can inspect the site.

What to bring Sleeping bags, roll mats, food, cooking equipment, warm clothes, waterproofs, torches, mobile phone, toilet paper and so on. You can buy firewood and / or charcoal from us if you do not want to collect firewood. Whatever else you want to carry!

When? Negotiable, but preferably starting between 5.30pm and 6.30pm and finishing between 8.30am and 10am. You must keep to your booked times, otherwise your Land Rover transport into the wood will not be available. Admission to the rest of the wood is included in the price for half a day either side of the camp-out.

How much? Normal admission charge plus £44 if transported both ways, £33 if collected only or £22 if no transport (wheelbarrows only). Plus a £50 returnable deposit against misuse or damage.

Safety and behaviour  You are entirely responsible for the safety and behaviour of yourself and your group. Instruction will be given on the use of the fire site and on general woodland safety. Fires must not be lit elsewhere. Do not climb or damage trees or shelter. No radios or recorded music. All rubbish must be taken away with you and the site left as you found it. Any damage to the shelter, fireplace, benches or woodland will be deducted from your returnable £50 deposit. You will be provided with spades to dig sanitary pits.
